Study Tips For Retention While Fatigued
Let’s face it… remembering what you study when you are tired after putting a full days work, is darn near impossible. Some people are able to stay focused, while others drift off and stop retaining the information.
Chances are… like me, you’re working during the day and studying at night.
I used to find it very difficult to keep my mind fresh, so by the end of the day, I’d be able to study. At first it was simple to do both in the same day. However, as things got busier at work, I’d find myself day-dreaming quite a bit more while studying.
SO what did I do? Well, I started studying other topics on memory skills, brain potential, and brain hemisphere dominance.
Then it all started making sense. The way my brain was/is wired accounts for the way I learn. Alot of other things started to make sense to, like why I resond to people the way I do, or why I take on too many tasks. It opened up a whole new way of thinking and strategies to ensure I was using my brain more efficiently.
And you know what? Once I started using some of the techniques, I simply began to learn more easily. It helped shaped the way I study. And I also tried some things on my son.
He’s an 11 year old boy with a physical handicap. Although his brain is fully functional. So I applied some of the techniques for memorization through association. Quizzed him after we got through 20 vocabulary words on the Meso… something era (Social Studies) and he answered all the questions right.
The next day, he missed 2 out of 30 questions.
BUT!!! When he had his test in class a few days later. HE ACED IT!!! This is a kid who could care less about studying and due to his physical limitations and having to use a computer device to communicate, I could barely contain myself.
So how did we do it?
We used a combination of tools and techniques. I’ll have to write about each one separatly so it will make sense. Certain tools helped me to present the material to him in a way that he could learn and retain the information. Did I also mention he was diagnosed with ADHD?
So you can imagine, it was a task in itself to get him to stay focused long enough to get through all the words. It was a task for him to have to sit through the test, take his time and get a 100%!
